Until a year or so ago, SPF was something I only associated with holidays.
Although I’ve always protected my face when going abroad or spending time outside during summer, I would never consider putting suncream or any form of SPF protection on my face for the rest of the British seasons. Oh face, I’m so sorry – how wrong I was!
I didn’t really take SPF seriously in terms of daily application until I started watching skincare and makeup videos on Youtube and vloggers would put on SPF before applying their makeup. Ey?! But since then, it seems that the importance of SPF is becoming increasingly well known and its much easier to educate yourself on these types of things.
I’ve since realised that only needing SPF in summer is a big fat myth. Protecting your face everyday is important, but it’s even more important if – like me – you sometimes use acidic skincare that can make your skin even more vulnerable the sun’s rays.
I figured that I’m not the only person that hasn’t been aware of the need to wear SPF daily until recently (right?!), so I thought I would share my new-found knowledge with you!
Everyone knows that SPF protects your face from the sun, but it actually does far more than prevent your skin from burning – it prevents the sun’s rays from damaging your skin and leading to long-term skin damage. Sun protection is even important for days that don’t feel particularly sunny, as your face is still being exposed to harmful UV rays.
Over time, this damage can lead to things that pretty much everyone wants to avoid – wrinkles, pigmentation, and even skin cancer in worst case scenarios. The skin is our body’s biggest organ, so it makes total sense that we should be doing all that we can to care for it!
One of the things I imagine to be holding people back in applying SPF everyday is the thought of wearing suncream everyday. Suncreams are usually sticky, oily and a bit intense, and I definitely did used to think that people were referring to these types of creams when talking about putting SPF on their face. However, with the rapid and constant evolution of skincare, there are now plenty of options to choose from when it comes to SPF – all of which feel a million miles away from the annoying creams you might associate with protection from the sun!
What to look out for…
Search for the term broad spectrum and you’ll be covered – literally. Broad spectrum means that your skin will be protected from UVA and UVB rays so you’re really giving yourself the most protection.
The actual Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is also important. From what I’ve read, SPF30 is best for everyday use, and this is the SPF I have seen most in the skincare I have looked at. However, if you have very fair skin that is prone to burning, it’s a sign that a higher factor might be more suitable for your skin type, in which case perhaps steer more towards SPF50 so you have enough protection.
SPF in your foundation is not enough. Sorry folks, but the experts have spoken! (Not me, don’t worry – this information has come from far more reliable sources than myself). Apparently, you would need to apply a considerable amount of foundation for you to actually get the protection advertised on the front of the bottle. I read one dermatologist’s explanation that you would need 14 times more foundation than usual to be applied in order to benefit from the SPF value, which realistically just ain’t gonna happen. In other words, don’t rely on your makeup to provide your face with the right sun protection. Instead, invest in an SPF cream.
At the moment, I’m using Dermalogica’s new Prisma Protect SPF30 cream, which I was kindly gifted recently. It’s a wonderful face cream that I apply underneath my makeup. Although I highly recommend this product, there are thousands of SPF creams sold by all of our favourite skincare brands, catering to a whole variety of budgets. Have a browse and find the right one for you! You’ll be thanking yourself in 30 years time when your skin doesn’t look like leather 🙂
