Two Resolutions to Set For the Rest of Your Life

“New year, new me”.

The season of New Year’s resolutions is upon us! Lots of us reflect over the past year and decide on a resolution – or several – to set for 2019. It seems like most of these are forgotten after a few weeks, but are more set in stone for some.

Myself? I’m not one for setting resolutions – I usually have to wrack my brains to try and think of one and this is surely a sign that they aren’t meaningful enough for me to stick to!

Last year, I instead set some goals for my blog and Instagram instead of the more traditional resolutions, and they really helped me to reach milestones that made 2018 bloomin’ brilliant. This year, though, I am going to focus on two things that I think everyone needs to focus on, but not just for this year – always. Now, that sounds slightly terrifying and like a rather big commitment (stay with me commitment-phobes), but these two things are actually something I feel quite sure about and I know they will help to better not only my life, but yours too.

I know you’re dying to hear them, so here we are: the two ‘resolutions’ I think we all need to focus on are being more positive, or as positive as can be, and taking time to look after yourself.

I am just as guilty of being the occasional negative Nancy as the next person is, when I’m having a bad day for whatever reason, when things don’t seem to be going my way, or when I don’t have the confidence in myself to achieve or do something. Usually a pep talk from my mum or boyfriend gets me thinking back on track and then I surprise myself by achieving things I never thought I would, and I have realised just how much a  positive mindset has a knock-on effect on many aspects of my life, and can be the kick up the bum I need to do great things!

I already made a start on this resolution last year and I’m slowly but surely getting better at thinking positively, proving myself wrong when I doubt myself, and knowing that absolutely everything works out in the end, no matter how bad it might seem at the time.

Why don’t you join me in trying to be more positive, changing your thought process and mindset whenever we’re feeling negative or disheartened? Who knows what incredible things we could achieve, guys!

I know this is something a lot of people struggle with. Parents who have little ones to look after, people who have family and friends who need their support, and others whose jobs are demanding and a priority – so many people focus on others more than they focus on themselves, and this shouldn’t be the case.

Self-care isn’t selfish, it’s important, rewarding, and beneficial, and it also allows you to then give your all to the people around you. If you don’t take the time to look after yourself, you can quickly burn out and this can have repercussions on near enough everything. I for one can become tired and lethargic during periods of stress, and can even become ill (uni was fun), but I’m going to make a solid effort to not let things get on top of me, and make sure I live a balanced life!

No matter how busy we are or how many things we have on our ‘to-do’ list, we need to make sure we give ourselves the space and break that we need. This doesn’t have to mean whisking away on an expensive spa break or holiday – unless you’re lucky enough to do that – no, this could be anything from giving yourself half an hour to enjoy a nice bubble bath, or read a book, or put on a face mask, or write a blog – whatever makes you happy and provides you with some important ‘me’ time. Think about the ‘luxuries’ you enjoy most and treat yourself to them!

Of course, not everyone has the time to focus on themselves often, but even if it’s setting aside an hour every Sunday or a day where you can afford to not do anything, I think it can quickly transform your motivation, positivity, productivity and happiness! So stop making excuses and make it happen, you deserve it.
