Winter Skin Detox

Winter Skin Detox

It’s January. It’s currently snowing, AND it’s the coldest it’s felt all winter. I’m not sure about you, but it feels like we’ve been hibernating for the last few months, trying to avoid the cold at all costs and instead cosying up with the heating on full.

Unfortunately, whether we’re cosying up with the heating on or braving the cold outdoors, our skin suffers. If enduring the cold wasn’t torture enough (slightly dramatic), heating dries out our skin terribly and so does the wind and snow. You might have noticed your skin feeling extra dry over the past few months and just not quite as on fleek as usual, and trust me, you aren’t alone.

Just like our skin has to adapt to the winter, so does our skincare routine. I bought some brilliant new products this winter and also received some great ones, and thanks to these contributions my skin is feeling healthier than ever. It’s so important to give yourself a winter skin detox, it’ll get you feeling healthy during a time of year that is notoriously unhealthy. Keep reading for my recommended products for the perfect winter skin detox!

Vitamin E Face Wash

Body Shop Vitamin E Facial WashI came across this product from The Body Shop when I was on the hunt for something that my face needed. Although I hadn’t quite decided what it was that my face needed (a nice healthy tan would be nice), I knew this would be up to the job. I’ve heard great things about Body Shop’s Vitamin E range before but had never got round to trying it. Due to Vitamin E having so many advantages for the skin, including being great for hydration and protection against UV rays and environmental conditions, I was hoping this would be the ideal skin detox product that I needed.

As I use a gentle face exfoliator everyday, I decided to pop this into my skincare route between exfoliating and moisturising for some extra pizazz. The texture of the product is light and smooth, easy to wash off with some water or a wet face cloth. The hydrating properties of Vitamin E stimulate your face’s natural moisture whilst also supplying it with some extra hydration to equip your skin to fight against the horrible cold temperatures and dry heating! At just £8, you can’t really go wrong.

Sand & Sky Clay Mask

Winter Skin ProductsNow this is the star of the skincare show, without a doubt. Nothing takes more of a battering than our face – it has to endure the wind, the rain, hot showers, towel dries, etc etc. All of which are perfectly normal but take its toll on your poor face.

I received a Birchbox subscription for my birthday at the end of last year, and one of the best products I received as a result was the Sand & Sky Purifying Pink Clay Mask. This insane facemask detoxes, invigorates, refines, and brightens your face, all in one! It’s smooth in texture and pinker than most clay masks, although dries white (hence the weird look I’ve got going on above – I can’t believe I’ve uploaded a picture of my face looking like this… am I okay?).

Sand & Skye Clay MaskThe pink Australian clay tingles while tackling any impurities and comes off super easy with a damp cloth or water. Once removed, it really does leave your skin feeling incredibly soft and so radiant. I’ve used plenty of face masks in the past as it feels like something you should do, but this is the only one I have used that I can see and feel a difference with. It’s recommended to use this face mask once a week and on an evening, allowing it to work its face-magic overnight! I personally also like to use it on a Sunday morning and have a make-up free day (the best type of days).

Incorporating a face mask into your winter skincare routine will help to give your skin that extra support and allows it to detox after a week of fighting against winter conditions. I could not recommend this product enough and all of the online reviews speak for themself. At just under £40 this mask is more expensive than high street brands but only a small amount is needed to cover the face, making it great value for money.

Global Protection Day Cream

REN Evercalm Global Protection Day CreamWhat I class as one of the most important parts of my winter skincare routine, and any time of the year skincare routine at that, is, of course, moisturiser. I’m not sure if any of you can relate, but the moisturiser I had been using throughout the summer months just wasn’t hydrating my face enough from November onwards.

Ensuring healthy and glowing skin during winter relies heavily on you using a good moisturiser. With about a gazillion moisturisers out there, it can be hard to know which product to go for. They all boast a variety of benefits but the key thing to look at is the ingredients (I recently watched a programme about skincare so now I’m a self-professed expert, FYI). Glycerin is one of the ingredients to look out for – it’s one of the few substances that actually does hydrate, enhance the skin’s protective barrier, and have effective anti-ageing properties.

The REN Skincare Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream contains Glycerin alongside many other brilliant ingredients, such Omega 3 and rejuvenating oils. The term global protection immediately stands out as something that would seem to be great for your face during winter, and that it is. Being wonderfully hydrating, the cream itself is also warming and has a beautiful spa-like smell – always a bonus! The cream is thick enough to supply your face with optimum protection against the harsh winter conditions or extreme heating, but isn’t greasy in the slightest. Although many people prefer a moisturiser that sinks into the skin never to be seen or felt again, I think it’s necessary to have something a little thicker and more substantial to keep your skin hydrated in winter.

Sugar Lip Treatment

Fresh Sugar Lip TreatmentDo you suffer from dry lips? My lips always suffer in winter. Without fail, they become dry and irritated, and once it starts, it’s so hard to come back from. Every year I try a new lip balm or treatment and it always works for a while and then epically fails. I know I’m not alone in this, so if anyone else can relate, you will thank me for this winter lip detox recommendation!

When your lips are extremely dry, sometimes they need a gentle scrub to get rid of the dry skin and allow healthy skin to prevail. Fresh is a brand that incorporates natural ingredients into all of their products and their Sugar Lip Polish is the absolutely perfect lip product for the task of exfoliation! Brown crystal sugars gently exfoliate while shea butter and jojoba oil leave your lips feeling nourished and protected.

A lip scrub is good practice to do once or twice a week, but it’s important to have a lip balm on hand to be able to top up throughout the day. Luckily, Fresh also do a Sugar Lip Treatment, which has been my saviour over the last few months! Although hard to explain, its texture is like no other. It feels similar to a normal lip balm only so much better – smoother than smooth, if that’s possible, and so fresh with a hint of citrus in scent. Some lip balms involve you having coat your lips over and over before feeling like the balm has sufficiently protected them, whereas one swipe of this feels more than sufficient. After just one day of using this product my lips were no longer dry and I have found that I don’t need to re-apply as much as I would with a regular lip balm.

Although these lip products are slightly more expensive than some, coming in at around £20 each, it really is worth the investment. Not having to apply as much product helps it to go a long way, and having nice and healthy lips really helps in helping your face to feel hydrated.

Pomegranate Noir Body Crème

Now that your face is equipped, it’s important not to overlook the rest of your body in your winter skin detox. There is nothing worse than dry skin, not only does it not look great and make skin look even paler, but it can also become itchy and irritable too. Investing in some good body lotion is a must!

My absolute favourite at the moment is the gorgeous Pomegranate Noir Body Crème by Jo Malone. This beautiful scent is easily recognisable and loved by many, myself included. This body crème combines the wonderful scent with an amazing thick lotion that conditions the skin with jojoba seed, cocoa seed and almond oils. A layer of this lasts all day and so does the smell. Anyone would think you’re wearing the Pomegranate Noir fragrance!

Getting into the habit of putting this on at least once a day has improved the hydration of my skin massively. I prefer to put it on after a shower as it locks in all of the moisture, but it’s also great to put on if you’re wearing anything with bare arms or legs (brave, in this weather), as it helps to give you the healthy glow that is much-appreciated during this time of year.

Skin is the biggest organ in our body and so it’s so important for us to take the time to look after it. Investing in some great and trusty skincare products can make the world of difference when added to your skincare routine. Not only does this help us to look and feel healthy, but it also helps with anti-ageing and the application of makeup.
