This miserable British weather, matched with miserable January blues, has got me thinking back to warmer climes. 2017 was full of many wonderful experiences but a particular highlight had to be a fortnight in Florida, but more specifically, a weekend trip to the wonderful Miami. A dream I had been longing to live!
Driving to Miami in a convertible Mustang started the trip off in style, but the fun didn’t stop there. Of course, the first thing we wanted to do was enjoy the Miami atmosphere over a beverage – or several. Thanks to the powers of Google I had come across a certain bar that had been ranked among the top 50 bars in the world, being placed at number 18, to be exact… now this was the kind of standard I was talkin’ about. And let me tell you, it’s something I need to share.
2727 Indian Creek Dr, Miami Beach, FL 33140
Compact, romantic watering hole in the Freehand Hostel offering inventive drinks & a large backyard.
The above description says it all. This bar is like nothing I have seen or visited before. As a top-50-bars-in-the-world kind of establishment, you might expect it to be a modern, shiny, decadent, and posh premises, yet this was the complete opposite. This was the real Miami.
As part of Miami’s Freehand hotel, Broken Shaker is literally situated in the ‘backyard’ of an art-deco Miami building. You walk through the hotel premises and into a super casual but extremely vibey outdoor space. Met by rustic furniture, mismatched chairs, many fairy lights, and an amazing music playlist – you feel right at home as soon as you walk through. The waiters and waitresses are as casual as the surroundings and this makes for an extremely fun and personal experience.
The courtyard is embellished with wonderful plants and amazing colours, completely screened off from any other surroundings. But let’s get down to the important stuff – the cocktails. So this bar has won various awards and their whole ethos is to only use ingredients that are completely natural. This means that they include syrups and infusions made in their very own gardens. As a result, the flavours are truly spectacular. Some of the best Miami mixologists are known to work here and they have created a cocktail menu that is extremely tempting. As all ingredients are fresh, their menu is always changing depending on what they have and what is in season. Alongside this, they always offer a daily punch special – something we didn’t hesitate to indulge in.
(Unfortunately this trip was pre-blog days so the photos I took aren’t quite up to my usual standard – hence the half-drunk-drinks shot… not sure whether to blame this on pre-blog or post-cocktails?)
To try and summarise the atmosphere of Broken Shaker, the music they were playing was the type of music you are constantly writing down in the notes on your phone or Shazam-ing so that you don’t forget what it is and can later add it to your playlist. I mean, this was happening with literally every song. The music, the setting, the drinks, the people, and the beautiful Miami air made it one of the best evenings I have had.
If you suffer from the munchies after a few beverages – who doesn’t? – food is available to order alongside your drinks. Broken Shaker are known for their tacos, which looked scrumptious, but I indulged in the classic bacon cheeseburger which was pretty sensational as far as burgers go. It’s safe to say we developed a hefty bill but this is more of a reflection of the amount of drinks we had between four of us! Considering that it’s a visit to one of the best bars in the world, the prices are more than reasonable.
If Miami is on your bucket list, Broken Shaker should be right on there with it. It’s always nice to discover absolute gems when you visit new places, and it’s even better when it’s off of a recommendation that makes you certain that it’s going to be good. Consider this an absolute must-try recommendation.
My next adventure is a weekend in Milan at the beginning of February – our aim is to cram in as much as possible and so if anyone has any recommendations on things to do or see, please leave a comment and let me know! As always, thank you for reading and sorry if I’ve got you craving sun and cocktails.
